What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves the use of a device with tiny, sterile needles to create micro-injuries or punctures in the top layer of the skin.
These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural wound healing process, stimulating collagen and elastin production—two key proteins that keep the skin firm, smooth, and youthful.
How Does it work?
Preparation:
Skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort. Please come to your appointment with clean skin and avoid exfoliating for about 5-7 days prior to your procedure (this includes use of retinols)
Microneedling Device: A microneedling pen (automated device with adjustable needle depth) is used.
Procedure Process: The device is moved across the treatment area, creating thousands of micro-channels. Being that the area is pre numbed, patients can rest assured they will be comfortable throughout the procedure.
Healing Response: These tiny injuries stimulate a cascade of healing responses, boosting collagen
and elastin synthesis.
Procedure Time & Recovery
Session Duration: 30-45 minutes depending on area.
Downtime: 1–3 days of redness, similar to mild sunburn.
Recovery Tips:
- Avoid direct sun, makeup, and harsh skincare for 24–48 hours.
- Use gentle cleansers and hydrating serums.
- Apply sunscreen daily.
Risks & Side Effects
- Redness, swelling, and tenderness (temporary).
- Minor bruising or pinpoint bleeding.
- Risk of infection if done improperly.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially in darker skin tones, if not properly managed).
- Contraindications: Active cystic acne, eczema, open wounds, recent radiation therapy, or use of certain medications like Accutane.
Microneedling Pre-Care Guide
(Before Treatment)
- Avoid sun exposure for 24–48 hours before treatment (no tanning).
- Discontinue retinoids, exfoliants, and acids (AHA/BHA) for 3–5 days prior.
- Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen) 24 hours before, unless directed by your provider.
- No waxing, laser, or harsh treatments on the area for at least 1 week.
- Arrive with clean skin – no makeup, lotions, or skincare products.
- Inform your provider of any active breakouts, cold sores, or medical conditions.
Microneedling Post-Care Guide (After Treatment)
- Redness and sensitivity (like a mild sunburn) are normal for 1–3 days.
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours.
- Use a gentle cleanser and hydrating serums (e.g. hyaluronic acid).
- Do not use active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for 3–5 days.
- Avoid sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ daily.
- No strenuous exercise, swimming, or saunas for 24–48 hours.
- Do not pick or scratch the skin while healing.
- Stay hydrated and keep the skin moisturized.
